Villa College has opened up teaching degree sessions, set at European standards.
Speaking in the ceremony held to launch courses in September, Villa College Rector Dr. Ahmed Anwar said this year brand new two programs will be carried out in the College. The programs are BA (Honors) in Early Childhood and BA (Honors) in Primary Teacher Education offered by University of the West of England.
Dr. Anwar said that graduates of the programs will be able to secure employment opportunities in European nations.
“The two courses produce teachers in UK, Teachers will get trained to UK levels in Maldives at the same education standards. They will sit the same exam, earn the same qualifications,”
Dr. Anwar said the Government attaches high priority to education in pre- and primary school stages and therefore trained and qualified teachers were a necessary aspect. He said the College will first focus on properly implementing these two levels and in the future will expand to other school stages.
He said the number of international schools in Male’ will increase.
“Those places need trained teachers, teachers trained on international standards. We’re working to build this capacity,”
Dr. Anwar said the teacher training programs also needed to be reformed, stating that practices used in 1980 will not yield results.
Additionally, the College will run the MSC n Information Technology course with the University, another first for the College. Dr. Anwar said the course will be beneficial to students of IT. The one-year program is designed on international standards and is the first Master’s program in IT for the country.
