Immigration has said that there are many side businesses run in local markets by expatriates in the local market.
Speaking in a press conference held in Economic Ministry, Immigration said the local market was specially designated for local businesses but expatriates were running their own businesses, including import business.
Immigration said the Housing Ministry is also looking into the matter.
The issue of local market stalls is currently a major one; especially severe given that prices of vegetables are not under control of local sellers. Even though some stalls have maldivian sellers, they are not aware of prices or who the owner was.
Economic Ministry said the issue of locals exploiting expatriates in business and that they have been somewhat successful in combating the issue. Ministry appealed all to inform the Ministry if expatriates were working as cashiers.
Economic Ministry said the Ministry, Housing, Immigration and Police were working together to ensure the businesses were following guidelines and expatriates were working legally. The Ministry said they were focusing on the local market now.
