The resolution submitted by the Maldives to the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, which would assist the Maldives in maintaining the MSC Certification to ensure fair prices, has been passed by the Commission.
Fisheries Ministry said the Ministry had been in discussion in the Commission meeting currently being conducted in the Reunion Islands for 10 days. The Ministry added that due to the sensitive nature of the issue, the President had dispatched Fisheries Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee to oversee the procedures.
The Ministry had engaged in various dialogues with regional partners and European partners in order to secure enough votes to pass the resolution. The President had also pushed this issue during his trip to India, to the Indian Prime Minister. Fisheries Minister had engaged in discussion with his Sri Lankan counterpart over the issue as well.
Due to the sustainable form of fisheries and in IOTC, Maldives had been the recipient of three international awards in the past two years. The last award was awarded in the biggest international meeting of the sector held in Bangkok on May 23.
Participants of the IOTC have noted that protection from larger nations should be granted for the regional partners in the Indian Ocean region, especially from parties that engaged in fishing by use of nets.
