Environment Minister Thoriq has said that smoke in Male’ was increasing due to burning garbage in Thilafushi and that the government will resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Speaking to press in Environment Ministry, Minister Thoriq said the issue had always occurred in the rainy season annually and that an adequate solution had not been found to the matter.
“More complaints were filed in the past two days over the issue. The smoke blowing towards Male’ had increased due to change in wind patterns. We are seeking a solution to the issue,”
Thoriq said President Yameen has given high priority to create a state of the art waste management system in Thilafushi and that the President was closely monitoring the situation.
He added that state of the art machinery was a huge investment, including a large land area in Thilafushi, adding that it was in the planning stages.
Minister Thoriq said currently Waste Management Corporation was in charge of addressing the waste issue in Male’, in the absence of a proper waste management system. He noted that this will be adequately addressed once the industrial village is completed. The Minister said that next year a central location will be created in Male’ as a single location to collect waste.
Minister Thoriq noted that the amount of waste significantly increased every Ramadan, adding that public assistance was required in managing waste. He urged not to dispose waste in public places to prevent the spread of diseases, reminding the public of their personal responsibility.
