May Day march halted
The planned May Day march, organized by various civil organizations to mark May Day, had been halted by Police.

The march began near Social Center. However, the marchers were halted mere minutes later, with the Police placing barricades on the road, blocking their progress.

Internal Security Command Head Chief Superintendent of Police Hamdhoon Rasheed said on Saturday that they had received information on the planned march from various media sources. However, he said such a march will halt the traffic and impede the free movement of public.

Therefore, he added that the planned march will not be allowed to proceed as planned, taking into account public stake in the matter.

Speaking in the March, Tourism Employees’ Association of Maldives’ President said that the workers have to be ensured of their right, with the establishment of an international relations law, and that the lack of such a law was a saddening thing. He added that all workers have the right to be employed, free from retribution over personal views and liberties, especially for civil service sector employees.

Today’s march was organized by Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM), Teachers’ Association of Maldives (TAM), Maldives Port Workers’ Union (MPWU), Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN), Transparency Maldives (TM), Dhi Youth Movement (DYM), Youth Integrity Network (YIN) and Maldives Association for Physical Disabilities (MAPD).
