Addu City Council has begun the process of listing historical sites in Addu City.
Addu City Mayor Abdullah Sadiq (Sobe) said the listing had begun after the administration of the sites was assigned to the Council. So far, he said Maradhoo Boduge, used by the English during World War 2 and Fenifenmaage, residence of Suvadeeb Government head Afeef Didi had been listed. Additionally, two dive areas are to be listed as protected areas.
Sobe said the Council had instructed Addu City wards to compile their lists and to submit it to the Council.
Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Director General Ibrahim Naeem said the once reviewed, areas designated as culturally and historically significant, will be designated as protected areas. He added that there were many sites that need to be declared as protected, especially on an island, atoll and national level. Addu City has many areas of historical and cultural significance.
