Information Commissioner of the Maldives Abdul Azeez Jamal Abubakr has said that Maldives had, in the past, won over bigger nations that had no distinguishing factors such as own language or speech.
Abdul Azeez Jamal Abubakr made the statement delivering the keynote address in the ceremony held in Ghiyasuddin School to mark the Dhivehi Language Day.
Abdul Azeez Jamal Abubakr marked that many of the larger nations, some world powers, did not have a language or dialect that was truly theirs. But, he said Maldives had its own language, speech and dialects. He also noted that in some nations, their native speech had died out, stating that in Maldives Dhivehi had not died out.
Abdul Azeez Jamal Abubakr stressed the proper usage of Dhivehi was an essential aspect for every Maldivian.
“For some students, learning Dhivehi is not a priority. This stems in part from the belief that higher education can only be sought out from abroad. Let’s take doctors as an example. A student can go abroad, then comes back to serve here in the country. If the student does not have command of Dhivehi how can he properly interact with the patients and provide service?” he said.
Abdul Azeez Jamal Abubakr further said understanding language was the most pivotal aspect for every Maldivian.
