Foreigner sought as National Human Rights Commissioner
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that the Government was recruiting a foreign individual for the position of the National Human Rights Commissioner, who will work in the Attorney General’s Office.

He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held Sunday night to mark the 83rd anniversary of Maldives Police Service.

President Yameen said that a Commissioner was being recruited to advice the Attorney General on human rights issues, adding that he had appealed to UN Secretary General for assistance on the issue.

President Yameen had also said that the work on establishing a military court will also be carried out this year. He added that the Government had requested for assistance to address the issues in the Constitution and laws within the national market plan.

“Singaporean Government will assist in the process. Experts from Lee Kwan Yew Public School of Policy and Singapore National University will be assist in the process,” he said.

President Yameen noted that this will assist in developing strategies for national development as well assisting Police in fulfilling their mandate.

President Yameen said that the Constitution passed in 2008, was one that had facilitated a lawful, beneficial rule of law and constantly rectifying the mistakes was an essential part of it.

President Yameen added that he believed that Maldives should be made to a regional arbitration center, assisted by Singapore. He noted that a court for business transactions would also have to be opened in this process.

“The Judges in these Courts will not be just Maldivians, but will be with internationally accepted judges,” President Yameen said.
