Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that the missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan was being tracked and that the DNA of one of the hairs found in the red car matched to that of Rilwan’s mother.
Police made the statement in a press conference held this evening by the Serious and Organized Crimes Department’s Head Superintendent of Police Abdullah Shatheeh.
Shatheeh said that the lead individual on tracking Rilwan was Ahmed Suwaid and that currently Suwaid was out of country. Azlif Rauf, the owner of the red car, is also out of the country. Shatheeh added that the red car was taken to Hulhumale’ illegally and brought back to Male’ 15 days later.
Giving an update on the case, Shatheeh said that Police had reviewed over 1900 hours of cctv footage and checked areas in Male’, Hulhumale’ and Vilingili.
Shatheeh had declined to comment whether if Rilwan was alive, but noted that the investigation into the case was ongoing.
Shatheeh added that they were also investigating the doctored passport purported to be that of Rilwan’s. he also noted that the time to file the case was a deterrent in solving the case.
Shatheeh further said that five police officers had been arrested in the course of the case, but had been released by the Court. He noted that Shatheeh had also been arrested, but released later.
