President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that Malaysia had assured that they will support all initiatives pushed by the Maldives.
He made the statement speaking to press on arrival from the state visit to Malaysia.
He said that Malaysian media had reported the news on the 90 day free visas on arrival for Maldivians to Malaysia. “The Prime Minister had assured the process will be carried out smoothly,” he said.
President Yameen also highlighted on the latest developments with the country and Petronas Corporation to bring in cheap oil to the market and credit period.
“STO Managing Director also took part in the discussions. He met the Petronas MD the next day. Therefore, we hope to finish the project soon,” he said.
Noting that Malaysia was a regional economic development hub, he added that the Malaysian investors had requested to nullify the double taxation that will happen once Malaysian companies start to invest in the Maldives.
“Some European nations had expressed interest in furthering the investment opportunities. Malaysia wishes to sign more agreements of that nature,” he said.
President Yameen said that Malaysia had assured support for the country within the Commonwealth. He further said that even though the relationship between the two nations had deteriorated over the years, noting that the visit had rectified the problem. He noted that Malay PM is scheduled to visit the Maldives this year.
The President said that the biggest concern Malaysia had with the Maldives was over the loan taken by the country’s Exim Bank by a private party which had defaulted on the payments. President Yameen appealed all to refrain from engaging such cases.
President Yameen said that the Maldivian government had three separate branches and as such, exercised no control on the matter. He commended the Malaysian Government for the hospitality and kindness extended to him during his stay. He noted that he will increase the number of visits this year, as the uncertain situation of last year had been resolved.
