ADK Group Chairman Ahmed Nashid has stated that lack of super specialists in the country at this age was a key concern, adding that the resolving the issue was a national responsibility.
He made the statement in the ceremony held in ADK Hospital to award scholarships to three out of the five recipients. Nashid said that the initiative to develop locals to the fields has to be carried out by Maldivians as well.
Nashid added that the Maldives’ reliance on foreign assistance has to come to an end. He also said that he did not believe that foreign parties should be given the opportunity to market services available under local insurance schemes.
“Why are we encouraging Maldivians to go abroad? Why are they coming here? We have to think of the underlying issues. We have to understand why foreign health service providers are coming to this country with a low population. In some of those countries, the number of people sleeping on the streets are more than the population of the country,” he said.
Nashid further said that it was easy for him to hand over the management of the hospital to an international party.
He added that in the past 29 years, ADK had focused on developing human resources, with major positions in the hospitals being filled by locals trained from UK and other nations.
“With doctors such as Dr. Niyaz, I do not want to handover the hospital to a foreign party. We will have to conduct our affairs to our means,” he said.
Nashid said that while they have marked 29 years in services and that the 30th year has to be marked with future developments. He added that the hospital is more than capable of carrying out one innovation every month with current capabilities.
He noted that ADK Shipping and Trading had signed an MOU to construct a super specialist hospital in Foakaidhoo Island, with a budget of MVR 5 million. Nashid added that ADK Hospital and Management will manage the hospital.
Nashid noted that the success was achieved by hard work, dedication and commitment and a clear plan. He further noted that constructive criticism was a clear success factor, with a clear procedure in place to deal with the issues that can occur.
He further said that a loan from German Development Bank will be secured this year, adding that the 10 storey building of the hospital will be completed and in operation this year. Additionally, he revealed that an accommodation block for assistants will be constructed.
Nashid urged not to politicize the health sector, stating that it was a basic human right. He cited this as the core of the successes of the hospital.
