Japan to Extend US$ 90,850 for the Project for the Construction of Nolhivaranfaru School Building in Haa Dhaalu Atoll
The Government of Japan has decided to provideUS$ 90,850 (approximately Maldivian Rufiyaa 1.4 million) grantfor ‘The Project for the Construction of Nolhivaranfaru School Building in Haa Dhaalu Atoll’under its GrantAssistanceforGrassrootsHumanSecurityProject(GGP) scheme.

‘The Project for the Construction of Nolhivaranfaru School Building in Haa Dhaalu Atoll’ will be implemented by Nolhivaranfaru School in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. The project aims to construct a suitable school building to recognize children’s right to receive education in a child friendly environment. The project has been developed in cooperation with a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) attached to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) who worked at the Nolhivaranfaru School as a primary school teacher.

Nolhivaranfaru School currently accommodates more than 170 students. Due to shortage of classrooms, at present students of certain grades have to use a large hall separatedby partitions creating temporaryclassrooms. With this grant from the Government of Japan,Nolhivaranfaru School will be able to construct a school building with four classrooms, which would enable all the students to study in permanent classrooms ina better learning environment and with adquate learning facilities.

The Government of Japan has extended assistance to Maldives for over 40 years in various sectors such as fishery, education, communication and broadcasting, electricity and restoration from the Tsunami disaster; ranging from grassroots level to large infrastructure level.

The Principal of Nolhivaranfaru School stated that “I would like to express our deep appreciation to the People of Japan for accepting our proposal to construct a four-classroom building in Haa Dhaal Nolhivaranfaru School under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). With much pleasure, I would like to mention that Japan has been providing great assistance to a number of communities through the GGP projects since 1989. Nolhivaranfaru is an island with great future prospects where a number of row houses are being constructed by the government through grant aids, encouraging people living in smaller islands of the atoll to migrate to this island. Hence, the present school structure needs to be further expanded to meet the demands of the growing population. I am sure that this project will enhance greatly to solve the existing challenges that are faced by Nolhivaranfaru School due to lack of classroom space. So on behalf of our community as well as on behalf of the Ministry of Education, let me express our heartfelt thanks to the government and the People of Japan for the help and assistance provided to disadvantaged communities like ours,at the grass-roots level. Also I would like to express a word of gratitude to the Japanese government for their continuous support and cooperation extended in the development of our country at large, especially, in the field of education. Thank you.”
