The amendment to the Anti-Terror act, proposed by Vilingili Constituency MP Saud Hussain has been forwarded to the Parliament Committee for further review.
In today’s debate, opposition members said that the Government have to specifically state what the terror organizations are, in order to prevent any transactions carried out with the organization without knowing the organization was a listed organization. They said if the terror organizers are not listed, then individuals can face the risk of being jailed, for a crime they had committed without knowing that they were interacting with a terror group.
They added that such details regarding terror groups must be made available publicly.
Government allied MPs said that publishing a list of terror organizations might be detrimental to the nation, especially given that the nation was highly reliant on tourism.
Eleven MPs voted against the motion, while 2 MPs voted neutral on the issue. Twenty three MPs spoke on the bill during the debate session. The first hearing of the bill was heard on 22nd February 2016.
