Decentralized governance systems mark five years
Home Ministry has marked five years to the implementation of the decentralized governance system.

Speaking in the ceremony to mark the occasion, Home Minister and LGA President Umar Naseer admitted that there were significant challenges to implementing decentralization governance. He said that in spite of this, the decentralized governance system will continue to be implemented in the country. He added that President Yameen had given assurance that a robust system will be allowed to thrive in the nation.

Minister Umar said that the decentralized governance systems in the nation are yet to achieve their potential. Therefore, he said that there were many councils that need to be reviewed for further action. He added that even prior to the implementation of the system, some aspects of the system were in place in the governance systems.

Finance Minister Abdullah Jihad was the chief guest of the ceremony. In his address, Minister Jihad said that the Finance Ministry will lend all assistance required by the Councils, but stressed that all assistance will be within the set budget, except in emergency cases.

The decentralization act was ratified by the President on 17th May 2010. The act came into effect on 26th May 2011, after the first Councils and Council members were elected to their positions.

In tonight’s ceremony, the best performing councils were recognized for their efforts. The 10 best island councils and the top 3 atoll councils were also chosen and awarded.
