Will not allow chaos to reign freely: President Yameen
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has said that it was not an easy task to see a rise in the number of prisons but that was a necessary measure for the betterment of the society as a whole.

He made the statement speaking in the opening ceremony of the Hulhumalé Orphanage.

President Yameen said that children learned not just from parents and teachers. Teachers taught from books whereas the society taught broader values. He added that a situational change can be brought with the joint collaboration of the teachers and society.

President Yameen further said that children learned from the surrounding environment, adding that the Government had a core responsibility to inculcate proper values. He added that the Government will enact all measures possible to carry out this.

President Yameen said that slander is akin to theft, adding that he will seek to table the issue in Parliament, to criminalize such acts. He added that slanderous statements are made against individuals on a daily basis, and that it has reached to an extent where damages amount to over what is specified in the laws. He stressed that the Government will take action against those deterrents.

Responding to the claims made by former President Mohamed Nasheed who had claimed that the President had exercised undue influence in the judiciary, he said that this was evidence of the way Nasheed had conducted his tenure.

“Statements like that show that Nasheed had exerted undue influence in the judiciary during his tenure,” he said.

President Yameen said that there were three legal processes that can be completed by any person if unsatisfied with the verdicts.
