Regional meeting on Maternal and Perinatal Death started
The regional meeting on maternal and perinatal deaths surveillance and response has started in the Maldives.

Speaking in the opening statements, Health Minister Irthisham Adam said that the meeting was held in the Maldives by the World Health Organization (WHO) on invitation of the Government as the issue is still prevalent in the country. She added that the Government wanted to resolve the situation.

Minister also noted that this is the largest meeting of the nature held by WHO, which is being attended by over 100 representatives from various nations. She added that the lessons from the developments to the health sector in the country had to be shared with other nations. Minister Irthisham also added that a platform of this nature was vital to chart further development goals and areas of improvement.

Maldives has successfully reduced the infant mortality rates and maternal death rates. Additionally, the Government had been implementing measures to reduce these rates across the 132 health care providers across the nation.

Minister Irthisham added that the Government placed special emphasis on the health sector, especially maternal and perinatal health.

“Many local health care providers are in attendance today. They all need additional training,” she said.

Minister Irthisham added that 98 percent of births in the country are carried out in health care centers, adding that this was an incredible achievement for the country.
