World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized and congratulated the Maldives on the successes achieved in the field of maternal and perinatal healthcare.
WHO Resident Coordinator in the Maldives Dr. Arvind Mathur made the statements speaking to media after the opening ceremony of the regional meeting on maternal and perinatal deaths surveillance and response held in Paradise Island Resort.
Dr. Mathur noted that the Maldives had made significant development in reducing the complications associated with birth for both mothers and babies, adding that it was a significant achievement fulfilled by the Government.
He added that WHO recognized the work carried out by the Government, pledging the assistance and support of the WHO.
“Today’s meeting is attended by 110 representatives from 11 nations. This is after an eight year break. We thank the Government for this,” he said.
He added that WHO will assist in developing capabilities and assets in regional hospitals to address infant and childhood medical complications. Dr. Mathur noted that developing the capabilities will ensure timely response to issues.
Dr. Mathur stressed on the need to create a sustainable monitoring system, for better results. He added that Health Ministry and WHO will collaborate on creating such a system.
