Japan opens first ever embassy in Maldives.
Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon was the chief guest of the ceremony held to mark the occasion in Dharubaaruge.
In the reception, Minister Dunya delivered a statement issued by President Yameen on the occasion.
In the statement, President Yameen conveyed his warm congratulations and sincere best wishes to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Akihito, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Government and the friendly people of Japan. He reflected on the long standing diplomatic ties between the Maldives Japan, strong since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1967.
The statement added that Japan has always been at our side in times of triumph and tragedy, and has indeed proven to be a true and a trusted friend. There is no doubt that the opening of the Embassy today will help foster and develop these bonds further.
President Yameen further said that he was heartened to see that the agreements forged during his visit to Japan are finally starting to bear fruits.
Speaking in the reception Minister Dunya said that Maldives had begun the production of dried fish in the 14th century, with the sale to Japan beginning in the 15th century. She added that the product was now a staple of both nations.
Minister Dunya also noted Japanese assistance in key development projects, citing the various infrastructure projects carried out over the years. She said that every single Maldivian, directly or indirectly, had benefited from Japanese assistance.
Both Ambassador Kenichi Suganama and Japan’s Parliamentary Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Hamachi had spoken on the strong relationship between the two nations.
A commemorative document was issued to Ahmed Shain for the services he had rendered to the Japanese Embassy and Japan from 2009 onwards.
Cabinet Ministers, senior officials at the Foreign Ministry and diplomats of foreign nations attended the reception.
