Trawling has to stop for fisheries to foster
Trawling is a prominent issue in the country, which has attracted the attention of the public and concerned authorities and agencies. However, implementation of such a strategy to prevent trawling has not been carried out.

Fishermen from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and India had complained of lower weight of fish, in light of extensive trawling, which had not stopped in spite of the issue.

All nations in the region, except for Maldives, are carrying out trawling. This has raised the issue of highly diminished fish stocks in the region.

The Maldivian Government had always worked to find a solution to the issue, by way of diplomacy, which is yet to yield results in face of lobbying efforts by larger nations.

A “Maldives Tuna Workshop” is set to be held from the 3rd to the 4th of February and representatives of 19 countries are to take part in the workshop. This workshop is carried out by the Government of Maldives and International Pole Fishing Organization. International Seafood Sustainability Foundation is the co-sponsor of the workshop. The workshop will focus on sustainable fisheries.
