FENAKA Corporation has said that last night’s fire in Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo power station may be a case of arson.
Speaking to press, FENAKA CEO Nimal said that he could not offer additional information as the case was under review.
“The losses amount to MVR 22 million. All the generators were destroyed, including the solar panels on the roof,” he said.
Nimal said that FENAKA was working to bring three generators each from Laamu Gaadhoo, Gaaf Alif Vilingili and Gaaf Alif Maamendhoo and two generators from Male’. He added that priority will be given to first supply electricity to the hospital and the water supply grid.
“There are 800 tons of water in storage. On average the island uses 100 tons daily. We can manage for a week,” Nimal briefed.
Nimal further said that electricity services to the residences will begin soon and that the emergency status will be resolved within four or five days. He said that it was difficult to estimate when electricity services will resume to normal levels.
“Only then we will be able to determine what we need to bring in from abroad to resolve the issue,” he added.
Nimal further said that President Abdullah Yameen was closely monitoring the situation, urging for patience and assuring that FENAKA will not allow services to shut down.
Thinadhoo South MP Saudhullah said that this was akin to the fires of 2012 that had occurred in the island.
