Opposition MDP have alleged that the state is running trials against Adhaalath Party chief in a bid to intimidate scholars, negate the powers of free speech granted in clause 27 of the Constitution and that of peaceful assembly granted in clause 32 of the Constitution.
A statement released by the MDP said that the trials against Sheikh Imran had no basis in the law and unjust.
The statement released on Saturday said that the Constitution of the country, explicitly grants freedom of speech and assembly. The statement condemned the efforts carried out by the Government to intimidate, harass and conduct trials against key figures and their families.
“The chief of Adhaalath Party had been constantly and consistently raising his concerns over the current situation in the country and the Government’s rule. The charges raised against the Sheikh have been raised in a bid to ostracize him from the community, silence his efforts, with no basis in the judicial justice system. The fact that the trial has no legal basis is publicly known. The charges against Sheikh Imran have been levied as a warning to all other scholars, who wished to criticize the Government’s illegal acts. Such moves by the Government are a grave injustice. MDP condemns all such acts by the Government as they serve no purpose but intimidation and coercion and calls on the Government to revoke the charges and to free Sheikh Imran,” the statement said.
