Allergies, asthma, dental issues rise
Health Screen Reports, carried out on all grade one students of Male’ Schools, shows a marked rise in students with allergies, asthma and dental issues.

Speaking in the ceremony held to release the results in SHE building, MNDF Lieutenant Colonel Ali Shahid said that 17.5 percent of the students screened tested had vision issues. Out of this 40 percent of the parents had no inclination that their children had suffered vision issues.

Ali Shahid added that 22 percent of children were overweight, while 38 percent of children were underweight.

He said that they were able to conduct screening for 16 out of the 17 schools. Shahid noted that they were unable to hold screening for the school as another party had conducted health screening.

Ali Shahid stated that over 2140 students were screened. He noted that the testers had recommended to seek medical assistance if required. As such, over 800 students were given the recommendation to seek additional medical assistance.

Shahid said that students between 6 and 7 years were tested. Out of those tested, 47 percent were girls, 53 percent were boys.

Director at Education Ministry Fathimath Azza said that hearing impaired children in Addu City and dental issues in HDh Atoll were common. She noted that general cleanliness issues were prominent as well.
