STO to provide total parental nutrition service to IGMH
STO has started to provide total parental nutritional service to IGMH.

Speaking to press in STO Head Office yesterday evening, STO Medical Services General Manager, Hussain Sabaah said that this was an addition to the range of medical services provided by the company.

Total parental nutritional service is a system of feeding via IV’s for patients who are unable to eat due to varying reasons.

Sabaah said that STO was importing products of Fresenius Kabi, one of the most reputed companies in the sector with over 100 years’ experience in such medication.

Sabaah added that the service will be available in IGMH, but will expand to regional hospitals in coming months. He noted that the service is a vital one and that the company is working to provide the service from Aasandha.

Speaking in the press conference, acting Head of Medicine Department at IGMH Dr. Moosa Murad said that the service was essential for patients, therefore must be given sustainably. He added that this was a landmark achievement for the hospital.

Dr. Moosa Murad said that up until now, total nutrition care medication was imported for those patients who required the service.

“The arrangement for the service was finalized only now. This was made possible only with an agreement with an STO partner company,” he said.

ICU in charge and a specialist in Respiratory Medicine, Dr. Moosa Hussain said that those patients in ICU who cannot intake any food, will benefit most from the service. He noted that the essential nutrients can be administered to such patients by injections or IV fluids.

Pediatrician Dr. Ahmed Saeed said that the service can be given to premature babies, weighing as less as half a kilo or 750 grams. He added that this service was essential as premature babies can take a long time to feed on their own.

Consultant Surgeon, Dr. Ahmed Nishan said that patients recovering from internal surgeries such as gall bladder operations, also needed the service.

“If the service is administered properly, the patient’s condition improves drastically, the patient has a better chance of survival. This is an important service to the public by STO,” he said.

Foreign consultants had trained IGMH doctors and nurses on the administration of the service. Additionally, IGMH is to hold a CME to inform all doctors working in other hospitals in Male’.

Dr. Moosa Murad said that the service will also benefit those patients who have to be fed through nasogastric tubes.

“Many patients who are admitted have to be fed through nasogastric tubes. The food their caretakers bring from home are not upto standards. The service will eliminate such issues,” Dr. Murad said.
