Maldives Correctional Services has stated that the medical treatment terms for former Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim cannot be changed as requested by the family.
The service made the statement in a response issued to the letter sent by Colonel Nazim’s wife, Afaaf Abdul Majeed.
Nazim’s family had requested to send him to an Aasandha applicable hospital in another country, as it is a right granted to him under the Constitution. The family had also said that in the event the Service passes to send Nazim to Singapore as previously planned, then his costs should be covered under Aasandha service.
The family had also requested for an extension of the days available for treatment.
“If we take him to Singapore, they will give him seven days, out of which two days will be taken for travel. That leaves five days for medical treatment. If the doctors insist on eye surgery, they will do each eye separately. Two operations will take 14 days. What medical care can they provide in five days?” a family member said.
His family also said that the recommended medications was not available for purchase in this region.
Doctors have recommended medical care from abroad for Nazim’s health conditions. His family has appealed that the Government heed the concerns voiced by the Government and to facilitate such processes.
