President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom had said that Maldivians will dictate domestic policy and will not allow foreign nations to dictate internal matters.
Speaking to Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs of India, President Yameen said that reiterated that this Government is committed to upholding our democracy and rule of law.
President Yameen stated that this Government will not tolerate foreign parties to interfere with the country’s domestic issues, and underscored that a country’s integrity and national sovereignty must be respected by all. He also stated that every country must be able to practice their democracy without foreign influence. The President noted that the stability of any government in this region was of utmost importance to the other countries.
Some Indian media have pointed out that these statements were directed at India, while other media have pointed out that this statement was aimed at those organizations and nations aiming to dictate domestic policies.
Maldivian ambassador to the India, Ahmed Mohamed had previously stated that India will always respect and honor Maldives’ right to rule of law and have never instructed Maldives to act against the laws.
India had been a close partner of the Maldives, lending key assistance in times of need and assistance in development projects, in addition to assistance in political crises. The incidents of February 2012, which resulted in a regime change, was one of the most critical issues in the nation’s history. India was the first nation to accept the new government in place.
India has previously said that differences of opinion was a universal one. However, India will always remain in solidarity with the Maldives.
A minor fraction of Indian media have attempted in many cases to disrupt the relationship between the two nations. However, the relationship had remained largely intact.
Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Rajiv Shahare has previously said that Maldives is a fully independent nation and that the two nations were close friends.
