Wave of Luxury Resort Openings Set to Boost Maldives Tourism Industry

The Maldives is poised for a major expansion in its tourism sector as several internationally renowned luxury hospitality brands prepare to open high-end resorts across the country, significantly increasing accommodation capacity and strengthening the nation's position as one of the world's premier luxury travel destinations.

Industry experts believe the arrival of these new properties will inject fresh momentum into the tourism sector, attract new market segments, and further enhance the Maldives' appeal among high-spending travelers.

The expansion comes amid continued investment in tourism infrastructure and resort development. With several large-scale projects nearing completion, the country's bed capacity is expected to increase substantially over the coming years.

Two luxury resorts—Melia Wave Lagoon Maldives and Rah Gili Maldives—have already commenced operations this year, while a number of internationally recognised brands are progressing with resort developments scheduled to open in late 2026 and beyond.

Among the most anticipated openings is Bulgari Resort Ranfushi, located in Raa Atoll. Marking Bulgari's first property in the Indian Ocean and the Maldives, the resort is scheduled to open in 2026 following a brief postponement to ensure the highest standards of design, quality and sustainability.

Spanning 20 hectares, the ultra-luxury property will feature 54 villas, including a private-island Bulgari Villa, beachfront residences with private pools, and overwater villas. Guests will enjoy four signature dining concepts, including Italian, Chinese and Japanese fine-dining experiences, alongside a luxury spa, boutique and cultural facilities. Designed by renowned Italian architectural firm ACPV Architects, the resort will combine contemporary Italian elegance with environmental sustainability.

Another highly anticipated addition is Mandarin Oriental Bolidhuffaru Reef Resort in South Malé Atoll. Situated on a 34-hectare island just 30 minutes by yacht from Malé, the resort will offer 120 standalone villas, including overwater and beachfront options. The development will feature eight dining venues, extensive wellness facilities and the brand's signature spa and beauty experiences.

In Noonu Atoll, Mondrian Maldives is preparing to introduce a contemporary luxury experience with 72 overwater pool villas, 30 beach pool villas and three-bedroom residences. Designed to blend modern hospitality with the natural beauty of the Maldives, the resort aims to offer a fresh perspective on island living.

Meanwhile, Don Maaga Maldives will feature a collection of luxury water pool villas designed to offer privacy, tranquility and a seamless connection with the surrounding lagoon. The development places a strong emphasis on timeless architecture, craftsmanship and harmony with nature.

South Malé Atoll is also set to welcome Vaagali Maldives, Vignette Collection, developed in partnership with a local Maldivian family and operated under IHG Hotels & Resorts. Scheduled to open in late 2026, the intimate 52-villa resort will combine luxury hospitality with authentic Maldivian cultural experiences.

Adding to the growing list of premium developments is Aura Maldives, a five-star resort being developed by Pulse Hotels & Resorts within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll. Scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2026, the resort will feature 71 spacious villas ranging from one- to three-bedroom configurations. With sustainability, wellness and mindful luxury at its core, Aura aims to offer guests an environmentally conscious yet highly exclusive island retreat.

The development pipeline extends beyond 2026. Several additional luxury brands are expected to enter the Maldivian market in 2027, including Rosewood Ranfaru, Hyatt Regency Samarafushi Maldives, Capella Maldives, and Baccarat Hotel and Residences Maldives. Some of these brands will be making their debut in the Maldives, further diversifying the country's luxury tourism offerings.

These upcoming properties are being designed to showcase the Maldives' natural beauty while incorporating cutting-edge facilities, world-class service standards and sustainable development practices.

The expansion comes at a time when the tourism industry continues to perform strongly. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, 941,182 tourists visited the Maldives during the first part of this year. Of these visitors, approximately 654,206—representing 71 percent—chose to stay at resorts.

The number of operational resorts in the country has now risen to 179, offering a combined capacity of 44,977 beds. With the completion of the new developments currently underway, bed capacity is expected to increase significantly over the next two years.

Tourism remains the backbone of the Maldivian economy. Last year, visitors spent an estimated USD 5.4 billion in the country, marking a record-breaking year for the industry and representing a 15.8 percent increase compared to the previous year.

As a new generation of globally recognized luxury resorts prepares to open its doors, industry stakeholders expect the Maldives to strengthen its standing as one of the world's most sought-after destinations for luxury tourism, supporting economic growth, job creation and continued investment across the sector.
