Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Golam Sarwar, has arrived in the Maldives to participate in the upcoming Asia Media Summit (AMS), which is set to begin this week.
The Asia Media Summit, organised annually by the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), is being hosted in the Maldives this year in partnership with Public Service Media (PSM).
Delegates from across the Asia-Pacific region have already begun arriving in the country ahead of the summit, with more than 200 participants expected to attend the international gathering.
Golam Sarwar was welcomed upon arrival at Velana International Airport by PSM Managing Director Ahmed Shakeeb and PSM Chairperson Aminath Namza.
Also arriving in the Maldives for the summit was Timor-Leste’s State Secretary for Social Communications, Expedito Loro Dias Ximenes.
The summit will be held from 11 to 14 May at Villa Nautica under the theme “Maldives 2.0: From Tradition to Tech”.
According to organisers, the event will bring together senior officials, broadcasters, media executives, and regulators from countries across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss emerging trends and challenges facing the media industry.
Pre-summit activities scheduled for 11 May include a number of specialised workshops focusing on artificial intelligence in journalism and storytelling, the growing impact of AI technologies, safeguarding media credibility in the digital age, and the role of media in climate change communication and adaptation.
The official inauguration of the summit is scheduled for 12 May, with plenary discussions continuing through 13 May.
The event will conclude on 14 May with a coral planting programme at Kudagiri Picnic Island.
Recognised as one of the region’s premier media forums, the Asia Media Summit serves as an important platform for strengthening cooperation among broadcasters and media institutions, while promoting dialogue on responsible journalism, technological advancement, and the future direction of the industry
