Majlis fails to meet the quorum required to call for vote on granting more powers to the presidential commissions

Parliament has failed to meet the required quorum to call for vote on granting more powers to the presidential commissions.

Upon assuming office President Solih formed two presidential commissions, one to investigate extra ordinary deaths and disappeared people and the other on investigating corruption of the past administration. The government then proposed a bill to grant special powers to these two commissions.

However, in the last session of the last term of the parliament, the parliament failed to get the quorum required to call for vote. The item was set on the agenda in today’s sitting as well but the required number of MPs did not enter the chamber of the parliament. As per the regulations of the parliament 43 members should be present in the chamber of the parliament, while today there were 42 members.

Government MPs claim that the MPs who boycotted the session has a vested interest in the matter and that is why they are boycotting the session.
