Financial sector growth should reach every island: Zareer

Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer has emphasised that the development of the Maldives’ financial sector must benefit all citizens, ensuring that no island is left behind.

He made the remarks while speaking at a ceremony held to inaugurate a new Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) ATM in B. Goidhoo. The facility is the bank’s 62nd ATM installed in the Maldives.

Zareer said the expansion of financial services in the country should be in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s policy of ensuring equitable development across all islands. He said improved access to banking services would spare island residents the need to travel to their atoll capital to deposit or withdraw money.

“The progress achieved by the financial sector must reach every citizen,” he said, noting that the government would support MIB and other financial institutions in expanding their services throughout the country.

The Finance Minister also highlighted the growing popularity of Islamic banking and said the government wants such services to become accessible nationwide. He added that the installation of new ATMs would provide greater convenience to island communities while also supporting the expansion of tourism and guesthouse businesses.

MIB has recently expanded its ATM network in Baa Atoll, launching services in Goidhoo, Kendhoo and Thulhaadhoo. The bank has also opened a new full-service branch in Eydhafushi, the atoll’s capital, after upgrading its previous sales centre.

The new branch offers a wider range of banking services, including account opening and financing facilities for both individuals and businesses.
