Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj have stated that India will assist in providing fresh water till the Maldives water crisis is resolved.
In total, five sorties were flown from the Indian Airforce carrying 200 tonnes of water on Friday, and another 200 tonnes of water will be flown on Saturday through five sorties.
India has also dispatched two ships- INS Sukanya and INS Deepak –to Male'. INS Sukanya reached Maldives last night carrying 50 Tonnes of fresh water. This offshore vessel of the Indian Navy has reverse osmosis plants which produces about 70 tonnes of fresh water every day.
The Indian High Commission revealed that INS Sukanya will remain in Maldives until the water crisis is resolved.
The High Commission also stated that INS Deepak, a tanker vessel, was sent from Mumbai and is scheduled to reach Maldives by tonight with 800 tonnes of water.
Friendly countries have pledged to provide emergency water supplies to the Maldives following the current water crisis. In this regard, India, Sri Lanka, the United States of America and China have assured the Government of their support in this crisis.
On behalf of the President, Government and people of the Maldives, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dunya Maumoon has expressed sincere appreciation to the countries that have offered assistance to the Maldives in this time of need.
