Indian Navy’s offshore patrol vessel, INS Sukanya has reached Male’ with 50 Tonnes of fresh water.
Commanding Officer of the vessel stated that INS Sukanya was in the Maldives to hold a training program with the Coast Guard and departed within 5 days.
He said that although it has been 2 months on the sea, the vessel returned to Maldives to help the people of Maldives regarding the supply of fresh (potable) water within less than 14 hours since they were informed of the crisis.
The Commanding Officer said that they have informed the Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard that they will be of service immediately if they get any opportunity to provide any service to Maldives.
INS is carrying 50 Tonnes of fresh water has Reverse Osmosis plants which have a capacity of producing 70 Tonnes of fresh water per day.
The offshore vessel of the Indian Navy was welcomed by the Ambassador of Maldives to India, Ahmed Mohamed.
Ahmed Mohamed stated in the press conference held at INS Sukanya that India has always been the first to provide help to Maldives in all the crises faced by Maldives.
In this regard, he thanked the government of India for their generosity towards the Maldives.
A major fire broke out at the Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) generator control panel on December 4, causing extensive damage to the cabling of the generator to the Distillation plants and disconnection of water supply. The only water available at Male is stored in tanks and sumps and is being supplied for one hour every twelve hours.
