Jumhooree Party leader and Maamigili constituency MP, Gasim Ibrahim has said that international organizations will take measures against Maldives if the government brings any changes to anything stipulated in a certain way by the constitution without amending the constitution itself.
Gasim made this remark following the decision of the ruling PPM members to vote in favour of the the Bill on Amendment to the Judicature Act of Maldives (Act No. 22/2010), tabled by Ibrahim Shareef, MP for Maradhoo.
According to the proposal, the nine judges currently sitting on the High Court bench will be assigned to the North and South, with three judges allocated to each court.
Gasim said that every man made law needs changes and therefore if anything that needs to be changed is seen from the constitution then it should be amended. He said that he will cooperate in those issues if it is in line with his policies.
He said that changes to matters stipulated in a certain way by the constitution are brought without changing the constitution will lead to sanctions against Maldives. He said that this will result in an economic collapse of the Maldives.
“We do not want to witness our people in tears. I do not want to see that,” he said.
Meanwhile, the bill tabled by MP for Maradhoo, was accepted for Majlis consideration with 43 votes. There were 22 votes against and no abstentions.
At yesterday’s Sitting, 6 members spoke during debate time allocated for the Bill. The First Reading of the Bill was held on 24 November 2014 at the Seventeenth Sitting of the Third Session of the People’s Majlis.
