An MOU has been signed with China to commence a pre-feasibility study for the bridge which will be built between Male', Hulhule' and Hulhumale'.
Speaking at the event held at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure today, Minister for Housing, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that the signing will establish the developments which are being undertaken at present and in the future.
Additionally, the Minister noted that the project is one which has been given full priority by the government.
Recognizing the assistance provided by the Chinese government, Minister Dr. Muizzu conveyed his gratitude to them.
“I would like to acknowledge the cooperation of the President of China, the Chinese government and citizens of China in their effort to make this project a reality for the Maldivian government and people,” stated Dr. Muizzu.
Dr. Muizzu stated that while a significant proportion of the initial work has been completed and they have reached the final stages of the preliminary feasibility study, they will be commencing the research and design aspects of the project subsequently after the study.
Speaking on behalf of the Chinese government, Principal of Economic and Commercial Councillors Office of the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Yung Wen Zi Ong stated that he recognizes that the relationship between China and Maldives had progressed after the historical visit by President Xi Jinping to the Maldives. Additionally, Mr. Yung Wen Zi Ong noted that if the project is deemed feasible- the Chinese government are willing to provide financial aid for the project.
Furthermore, Mr. Yung stated that an ultimate decision will only be made after that the research team negotiates their findings with the Chinese government.
Mr. Yung added that based the findings so far, it looks hopeful that the project can proceed.
