A symposium has been held regarding the Strengthening the Criminal Justice System of the Maldives.
The symposium was held at the Traders Hotel yesterday morning and was inaugurated by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel.
During his speech, the Vice President noted that that the justice sector is not progressing at an ideal pace and that there are several areas that require reform. As an example he pointed out that criminals appears to be escaping punishment by taking advantage of loopholes in the system.
Attorney General Mohamed Anil also spoke at the ceremony. He said that disagreements between some of the state institutions regarding criminal justice have been causing a stop to the whole system.
He expressed hopes that the workshop will be a cause to achieve the aims within the next four years in strengthening the criminal justice system
UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Shoko Noda highlighted that Maldives has achieved a perfect constitution in the country’s journey toward democracy however holding a multi-party election in accordance to that constitution will not alone solve everything.
