Kinbidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Riyaz has said that the constitution should be amended to bring any changes to the councilors when laws have been passed regarding the number of councilors to be elected.
Answering a question raised by Miadhu Daily, Abdulla Riyaz said that the decision to not give a salary to those elected by the people should be first decided from within the Majlis.
“Why not consider allocating a number of members for each party. Then those members can be not given a salary. However, the constitution should be amended to do this. Regardless of the recommendations, this cannot be done without amending the constitution,” he said.
The PPM recommendations for the budget include changes to the decentralization Act by reducing the number of councils and giving only salaries to the council President and to give an allowance to the council members.
This recommendation was passed by the majority of members at the committee. JP and MDP members in the budget committee voted against it while PPM and MDA members voted in favour of it.
