Maamigilli MP Gasim Ibrahim on Sunday stated that there is no equity to be seen in the regulations which had been compiled regarding the duties which are to be collected in the coming year, to generate state revenue.
MP Gasim made the remarks during the meeting of the Budget Review Committee held on Sunday.
He had raised questions, regarding the decision to nullify the duties being collected from gold while the duties being collected from perfumes, cars and such luxury items had been decided to be increased. He also raised the question of whether the decision had been made to benefit handpicked individuals or not.
MP Gasim noted that the development projects - which are to be invested from the revenue generated from the new works which have been mentioned in the state budget for next year - are being mainly targeted to Male'. He added that a big portion of the state budget is spent on the development works of the capital city.
Some members had questioned the progress rate of the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) projects, while others had stated that the budget is also aimed at the developing islands of the country.
