President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that there will be no people wielding knives on the streets when the Peoples’ Majlis pass the amendment submitted by the government to the law which prohibits threatening and the use of sharp objects.
President Yameen made this remark speaking at the ceremony held at Alimas Carinval to celebrate the anniversary of the PPM Coalition government.
President requested the members to pass the proposed amendment to the law which prohibits threatening and the use of sharp objects before they go to recess.
He said that he is urging the members to pass it to ensure the security and safety of the society for the people.
President Yameen said that three people with big knives went into a school. He said that there is not much that can be done by the police in such a situation. The culprits should be taken to court within 24 hours.
“The police can arrest them and take them. Within 24 hours they have to be taken to the judge,” he said.
“We want to amendment this bill for the safety and security of the people. The crime rate has been curbed by 35 percent compared to last year. This is a remarkable achievement. We commenced work within the Majlis to make the laws fool proof to save the people from the oppression of criminals,” he said.
