Secretary General of the Jumhooree Party, Ahmed Sameer has said that Maldivians are not getting jobs because the right opportunities are not provided for them.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Sameer said that the lack of employment opportunities for Maldivians has always been a concern. He said that he even discussed the matter when the current President was the labour minister of Maldives.
Sameer said that there will be always difficulty for Maldivians to get jobs if the labour ministry provided quota to bring foreign workers.
“The truth is that Maldivians do apply for jobs. However when they call the place, they are told that they applied too late. However, later they claim that no Maldivians applied. So then they bring foreigners. As long as quota is given to bring these foreigners then Maldivians will not have these employment opportunities,” he said.
Sameer said that a registry should be established in the labour ministry to monitor those who are looking for jobs. He said that if any jobs are vacant then employees should be selected from that registry.
Sameer also said that the labour ministry should monitor the employee selection process of bigger companies.
