MOU signed for the provision of goods for addressing climate change between the National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Environment and Energy of the Republic of Maldives. This ceremony was held at Mookai Suites Hotel this morning. Minister Mr. Throriq Ibrahim signed the MOU on behalf of the Ministry and Counsellor Liu Qiang, Charge d’affaires and Deputy Head of the Chinese Embassy signed on behalf of the Chinese government.
Last year, the Chinese government has provided 250,000 energy efficient LED lights to Maldives and have already been in use throughout the islands of Maldives, thus significantly saving the energy and cutting the carbon emission. The LED lights have been provided to 509 institutes of Maldives and it has been distributed to 164 islands of Maldives.
Under the MOU signed today, 10 sets of solar home systems and 200,000 energy efficient LED lights will be provided by the Chinese government. Approximately, MVR 300 is estimated to be saved if the LED lights are used for 8 hours per day and if 75% of the LED lights which has been provided are used, MVR 49 million would be saved.
