Acting Health Minister, Defence Minister Colonel (retired) Mohamed Nazim has said that self-confidence is important to be safe from mental problems. He said that self-confidence cannot be attained except through strengthening ones faith.
Minister Nazim made this remark Speaking at the ceremony held to introduce the National Mental Health Policy at Nasandhura Palace Hotel on Monday.
He said that mental illnesses have been on the rise in Maldives. He said that there is a rise of mental problems even among children.
Minister Nazim also noted that being mentally fit is the key to lead a healthy lifestyle. He further added that the mental health policy causes a rather big hindrance in the economic development of the country, and stressed on the need to find a solution to the issue.
He said that the amount of cases being filed under mental illnesses could be reduced by raising awareness and by discussing about the issue on a wider scale. He also said that this would, indeed affect the daily lives of the common man.
In addition to this, Minister Nazim said that mental illnesses could be cured with the right treatments, and revealed that the main aim is to introduce such treatments in Maldives in the near future.
