Commonwealth’s stand is the reason for the recent damages to Maldives- President
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the stand taken by the Commonwealth during President Dr. Mohamed Waheed’s presidency is the reason for the recent damages to the country.

Speaking at an event held last night by the youth of Machangolhi district in Male’, the President said that Maldives had to face many challenges during that time and it was difficult to get loans.

He said that he had to face many challenges and had to rectify many issues when he was incepted as the President. He said that many foreign countries caused much pressure on the government so much so that doubts were raised regarding sovereignty of Maldives.

President Yameen said that many foreign states and organizations tried to cause undue influences in various issues after the change of government. He said that the results of the pressure of the commonwealth on Maldives were seen during that time. However, Maldives joined that organization in the hopes to be as one family under one roof.

In addition to this, he said that the former President Mohamed Nasheed also caused many such difficulties for the nation. Due to this the President said that he had to focus on getting the trust of foreign countries during the first year of his presidency. In this regard, he has visited some countries and the trips have been very successful so far.
