Meedhoo constituency MP Ahmed Shiyam Mohamed has urged that the former President allowances should be cancelled for any former President who cause damage to the nation.
Speaking at yesterday’s sitting of the Peoples’ Majlis, MP Shiyam said that one of the most famous tourist magazine in France is calling for a boycott of Maldivian resorts. He said that the leaders of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is behind this campaign.
Shiyam said that the former President being involved in such a campaign to tarnish the image of Maldives and cause economic damage to the nation is something unimaginable.
He said that if this was done in another country then such people will be behind bars.
“They are causing great loss to the people and the nation just for the sake of their hunger for power. So I call the respected Majlis to withhold and cancel the allowances given to former Presidents from any former President who perpetrate such acts of treachery towards the nation,” he said.
He also questioned the sincerity of the various environmental works of the former Presidents. “Every former President claims to be the king of Environment or similar titles. They are claiming they are the father of environment in various foreign TV Channels. But think! Is there any system to dispose and destroy waste in any of the islands. These people become grandfathers of the environment while doing nothing beneficial for the environment,” he said.
Shiyam said that the current government is working to establish such waste disposing systems in every inhabited island within the five year term.
