‘Midterm Workshop for National SAICM Implementation’ has commenced
The ‘Midterm Workshop for National SAICM Implementation’ has commenced today at the Girifushi Training Centre. The SAICM project involves a comprehensive assessment of the chemical management infrastructure and designing, operation and institutionalizing a comprehensive National chemical profile and chemical database. This 2 day workshopis organized by the Ministry of environment and Energy and the Ministry of Defense and National Security and UNITAR.

The main purpose of this workshop is to make the various stakeholders work hand-in-hand in managing chemicals and to raise awareness concerning the challenges currently faced in chemicals management. AMoU was also signed between the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Ministry of Defense and National Security, regarding the development of a National Chemicals Database.Objectives of the MOU include designing and developing the database, delivery of the training, publishing and linking it with national chemical safety webpage. Discussions on the National Chemical Profile were also held. During the opening ceremony, the Minister of State of Environment and Energy, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim, the Minister of State for Defense and National Security, Mr. Mohamed Zuhair and Senior Advisor of UNITAR, Professor Hans de Kruijfstressea the importance of stakeholder involvement in managing chemicals. Objectives of the MOU include designing and developing the database, delivery of the training, publishing and linking it with national chemical safety webpage

Participants from the National Drug Agency,Environment Department of the Ministry, the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, Health Protection Agency, Food and Drug Authority, Maldives Custom Services, Ministry Of Defense and National Security, Maldives Police Service, MWSC, Maldives Airports Company, AMDC and MNU joined the Workshop.
