Spokesperson of the government, Ibrahim Muaz Ali has said that the coalition leaders will decide on whom to appoint as a Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis.
Answering a question raised by Miadhu Daily at a press conference held yesterday, Muaz said that the government will not make any decisions regarding such matters. He said that a special committee has been made among the coalition leaders to decide on such matters.
Muaz said that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s stand regarding such issues is to make decisions considering the interest of the nation over the interest of a party or an individual.
A council member of Jumhooree Party informed Miadhu Daily that they support the stand of the President. They said that they believe that the President’s stand is to decide on the matter considering what is best for the nation rather than making the decision considering the view of the majority party in the Majlis.
“I know that the President signaled six months back to appoint Gasim Ibrahim as the Speaker expressing concern over how Abdulla Shahid is presiding over the Majlis sessions. However Gasim Ibrahim did not show interest because the Majlis term was coming to an end then. It is for that reason that Gasim Ibrahim made the decision to run for the Speaker,” he said.
The council member said that he believes that Gasim Ibrahim is the best candidate for the post and even many of the current and new members of the Majlis believe this.
