President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the Islamic unity of Maldives faces many challenges if Maldives are to participate in economic initiatives from western countries.
The President made this statement while speaking at the official function held at Dharubaaruge on Tuesday, to mark this year’s Republic Day.
In his speech, President Yameen said that that one of the main reasons why the Maldivian government took part in the Silk Route initiative, was because it was certain to reap in massive investment opportunities for the country; and that the decision was made with positive and thorough thinking.
The President added that China is currently the world’s leading economy; there is no doubt about that.
He said that “China is also the fastest-growing economy as well as one which we can keep up with as an Islamic country; and one that does not pose difficulties like those we face from the western countries.”
President Yameen explained that as Maldives is an Islamic country, it faces several obstacles in participating in some of the economic initiatives from the western countries; adding that it was not a case when allying with China.
Responding to those who criticize the decision of participating in the initiative, President Yameen appealed them to erase any ill feeling they have on it, while assuring them that the Silk Route initiative is a “wider door” to the improvement of the country’s economy.
