President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the former President of Election’s Commission, Fuwad Thaufeeg’s abuse of the right to exercise silence cannot be accepted.
Speaking at a rally held on Monday, President Yameen said that the right to exercise silence is a right of the common people and those who are at high level constitutionally responsible posts cannot exercise silence.
He said that Fuwad cannot exercise silence in matters where the electoral rights of the people are concerned. He said that he cannot choose to remain silent and violate the rights of the people.
Yameen said that the Elections Commission members, Human Rights Commission members, Auditor General and even the President of the country can never use the right to exercise silence in such matters. He said that this was debated in the Peoples’ Majlis.
“We have debated on how much this right to exercise silence can be used. In many world countries there are times when this right cannot be exercised. Auditor General cannot use it with regards to his audits. Human Rights Commission cannot use it with regards to the rights of others are concerned. If the rights of the people are concerned then this right cannot be used. The people should know clearly everything regarding the election,” he said.
He said that the commission should be made responsible and accountable for their actions in relation to electoral rights of the people
