Maamigili constituency MP and the leader of the Jumhooree Party, Gasim Ibrahim has said that the construction bill submitted at the Peoples’ Majlis yesterday is not corruption free.
Speaking at the Peoples’ Majlis yesterday, Gasim Ibrahim said that he understands the importance of a building code or a construction act. However he said that the bill submitted at the Majlis yesterday will bring many challenges to the mid-level construction companies.
He said that the Act is not applicable in Maldives. “The safety and engineering works and the quality is currently checked in the multi-story building projects in Male’ and throughout Maldives. However the challenges are many. So the one who wants to build 1 story or 1 floor will have to face all these challenges and he won’t be able to do it except by taking a special permit,” he said.
“How can this be done if is to be done decentralized throughout the Maldives. Does all the islands have the capable civil engineers? The answer is no. The reality is there are not enough civil engineers and many islands do not have anyone. If we are to do as in the larger developed countries then this will fail,” he said.
Gasim said that he believes that the bill should be sent back since construction requires both technical and professional review.
