Auditor General Niyaz Ibrahim has said that he has no intention in remaining in the post of the Auditor General regardless whether he wins the case in the Supreme Court regarding the amendment passed in the Majlis to the Audit Act enabling the president to reappoint the auditor general.
Niyaz told Miadhu Daily that he will submit the case at the Supreme Court regarding the amendment proposed by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) MP Ahmed Thoriq to the Audit Act enabling the president to reappoint the auditor general.
Niyaz said that it will not be easy for him to work as the Auditor General anymore. He said that the people will not accept his work if he remains.
“I will definitely be challenged by those who oppose me. And the other thing is that the people will not believe me if I continue. Therefore regardless whether I win the court case or not I do not intend to remain here,” he said.
He said that the people need the audit office more than him. He said that regardless he is fired or he resigns, the works of the audit office will still continue.
Niyaz said that he will not appoint a politician as his lawyer whatsoever, He said that he decided to submit the case because the amendment is against the law.
Article 218 of the Constitution states that the auditor general could be removed from office “(a) on the ground of misconduct, incapacity or incompetence; and (b) a finding to that effect by a committee of the People’s Majlis, pursuant to article (a) and upon the approval of such finding by the People’s Majlis by a majority of those present and voting, calling for the Auditor General’s removal from office”.
