Drugs and phones confiscated from three prisons

Maldives Correctional Services has confiscated drugs and mobile phones from Maafushi Jail and Male’ Prison.

Correctional Service’s Superintendent of the Prisons, Mohamed Asif said that more than 200 packets of drugs were confiscated from Maafushi Jail last week. In addition to that, mobile phones, phone batteries and sim cards were also confiscated.

He said that this includes 52 phones, 35 phone batteries, 23 chargers and 33 sim cards.

Asif said that these items were also found in Male’ prison. He said that 3 phones, 2 phone batteries and 1 sim card were confiscated from there.

He added that 4 phones, 3 chargers, 1 battery and 1 sim card were confiscated from Himmafushi Asseyri Jail.

Asif said that the correctional services has increased the prison securities to stop the smuggling of such items to the prisons.

He said that the 20feet high wall around Maafushi jail will bring a solution to these problems. He said that the lack of a outer wall is a loop hole which gives room to drop anything inside.
