Drug epidemic in Maldives being greater than in neighboring countries is worrying- Shameem
Ahmed Shameem has said that the drug epidemic is greater in Maldives than in other countries.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, the former state minister of the Tourism Ministry, Ahmed Shameem said that it is very worrying that the drug abuse has reached this level in Maldives.

He said that in foreign countries the drugs are much easier and to get than in Maldives.

Drug abuse is on the rise in country since the year 2003, as reported by UNDP. Opiods, hashish oil, cannabiniods are only a few of the highly abused drugs in the nation. There are also those drugs that are seized most of the times and also in large quantities.

According to International Narcotics Control Board stated that "Drug abuse in Maldives has reached alarming levels, and, according to several ministries and high ranking officials, is now the most serious problem the country is facing."
